Couples Therapy for Medical Professionals and Their Spouses
The demands of healthcare are seeping into your marriage, but both of you desperately long for a loving, happy relationship. You both worry about the divorce statistics of medical marriages, and you’ve heard the horror stories of jobs bragging that “no marriage has survived” their toxic work environment. The two of you want to find a way to connect and feel secure with your partner long-term.
You Love Each Other
So, why are you stuck having the same disagreements over and over again? You both feel frustrated, misunderstood, and resentful that you’re not being appreciated for all that you do. It feels like there isn’t hope for change because you can’t get rid of the challenges that come with the job- how can you really improve your relationship under these circumstances?
Medical Marriages are Hard
The culture of medicine is discouraging when it comes to hope for your relationship. The long hours, difficult schedules, regular exposure to traumas, and financial pressures are intense.
And to top it off, partners of medical professionals are given a lot of (ahem… unwise) advice like, “You’ll have a happy life if you just learn to never expect anything from your spouse.”
But Happy Medical Marriages are Possible
Nobody expects you to understand complicated medical assessments and interventions just by reading a textbook. Learning to create a rock-solid relationship isn’t something that comes through observation alone - most of us continually observe marriages that don't work (medical field or not)!
You need a therapist that can look past the title and years of training to see that underneath it all, you are a couple and family just like everyone else, hoping to build a happy and fulfilling relationship.
Hi, I’m Rachel, and I’m Here to Help
I’m a therapist and the spouse of a medical professional; I have been with my spouse through all of his medical training. I know what it takes to maintain a happy and healthy relationship in medicine because I’ve lived it.
As a marriage and family therapist, I help families with healthcare professionals to move past burnout and fatigue and learn to focus on connection and partnership. I’ve spent years working with couples and individuals in all stages of the medical journey.
Focusing on What Works to Create Long-Lasting Relationships
As I work with you, I’ll utilize evidence-based couple’s therapy methods, including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method, which are the gold standard for creating positive change in relationships. You and your partner will experience change as I act as your coach in learning to express and communicate emotion for more connecting conversations. I will work with both of you to move away from finger-pointing and blame to orienting yourselves as a team against the problems in the marriage. You and your partner will walk away with a new way of communicating and connecting that feels safe and secure.
