Finding a counselor, psychologist or therapist in San Luis Obispo County
Beautiful San Luis Obispo County has so much to offer- the ocean, mountains, and plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. But if you are struggling emotionally, sometimes the beautiful weather and gorgeous views can feel like it’s mocking your current state of being. Maybe you are desperate for relief, assistance, and hope. If you are looking to work with a therapist or counselor - I’m here to help you find the perfect fit!
I want to help you find a therapist in San Luis Obispo!
If you are at the point where you are searching the internet for a therapist, scrolling through online directories, I imagine that you have been struggling for a while. In my experience, people reach out to seek counseling when they are ready to feel better. You want to get started so that you can move forward with your life.
Here are my top tips for finding a great therapist:
Tip #1: Does your friend know a great San Luis Obispo Therapist?
Starting by asking people you are close to. Chances are, if your good friend has a therapist that they loved, that therapist is likely a good fit for you too! Personal recommendations often lead to some of the best client-therapist relationships.
The only caveat with this is that if the person that recommended their therapist is still a client, you want to be sure your issues are totally separate. If the issues between you and your friend are related it can create an ethical dilemma for the therapist and they will need to refer you out. So make sure clear boundaries are in place if you and the person who recommended you are currently seeing the same therapist!
Tip #2: Online directories to find a great therapist
Check out some online directories, such as Psychology Today. When you visit an online directory you can narrow down your search by things such as: gender, religion, payment, and specialties. I would recommend reaching out to at least 3 therapists because sometimes providers are not currently accepting new clients or once you chat with them, you may find that they are not the right match for you.
Tip #3: The Best SLO Therapist is the Best Fit for You!
Once you get in contact with a therapist - it’s time to feel out the fit. The fit between a client and therapist should be comfortable, safe, and positive. It is normal to feel nervous before starting therapy, and in the first few sessions. But if your gut is telling you no, listen to it! Here are some green flags and red flags for working with a therapist:
RED FLAGS WHEN TALKING TO A THERAPIST:
you leave the consultation or session not feeling understood
you felt that the therapist was too pushy and trying to tell you what you should do
you didn’t feel comfortable opening up or being honest with the therapist
you felt very distant and like you had completely different world views
GREEN FLAGS WHEN INTERVIEWING A THERAPIST:
you felt that the therapist fully understood how you’re feeling and was able to validate you
you felt confident in their ability to help you
you could tell that they have experience working toward goals just like yours
you feel enthusiastic about talking with them again
you feel hope for the future
Tip #4: Time to Lock Down Your San Luis Obispo Therapist!
If you have found a therapist with a lot of GREEN flags- schedule that first appointment! Remember to assess “fit” often, and remember that you have permission to change your mind. All ethical therapists should be encouraging and understanding if you need to make a change to a therapist who is a better fit for them. Ultimately, your healing comes first!
